CIVILEQUIP BUYING GUIDE
Bucket teeth, adapters and plow bolts: buying the whole wear system
Why a tooth, its adapter, the retainer and the bolts that hold cutting edges must be specified together, and which records to ask for.
A tooth is one part of a connection
On a bucket, the replaceable tip sits on an adapter welded or bolted to the lip, and a pin or retainer holds it in place. Each maker's system has its own nose shape and lock. Caterpillar's guide to ground-engaging tools describes tips of different profiles on the same system and a retainer that turns 180 degrees to fit or release the tip; a tip from one system will not lock on another maker's adapter.
So start with the installed system, not the tooth alone. The FIORM profile asks for tooth, adapter and retainer to be assessed together, and its M60E tooth page matches the tip to the adapter and retaining set. Lingfeng separates tooth, adapter and retention orders, and its E30 reference table lists type and part rows that need a fit check.
Choose the tip profile for the material
Tip shape trades wear life against penetration. A heavy-duty tip carries more wear material; a penetration tip has a narrower leading edge for compacted ground; abrasion-resistant overlays extend life in abrasive material. Tell the supplier what the bucket digs and on which machine, and ask for the hardness range and material of the tip and the adapter separately.
Treat hardness as a starting point. Ask for a sample tip and a record of where hardness was measured, and run a field trial on one bucket before replacing a fleet. Our guide to first samples and lot records explains how to turn the trial into an acceptance rule. More tips, adapters and bolts are listed under ground-engaging tools.
Plow bolts and cutting edges
Cutting edges and end bits are held by countersunk, square-neck plow bolts. Fit depends on head angle, neck size, thread and grip length, and the bolt must match the hole in the edge. The Jetty plow-bolt page checks head and hole fit and notes conflicting grade references; the Yuhe 4F3665 plow bolt decodes a 5/8-11 UNC reference and its matched nut. Both Jetty and Yuhe supply wear parts as well as fasteners.
Strength claims should name a property class. For metric bolts the reference is ISO 898-1, which specifies properties of carbon and alloy steel bolts by class, tested at room temperature. Inch-series bolts are often sold to SAE grades instead, so ask which system the marking follows.
Track-shoe bolts follow the same logic
Track shoes on tracked machines are held by bolts and nuts that see high clamp load and vibration. The Weishun and Yiteng profiles both deal with thread references, suffixes and grades: the Weishun track-shoe bolts page preserves F/D suffixes and nut pitch, and the Yiteng bolt family page flags a reference with conflicting pitches. Supply the machine model and the OEM part number, ask for a drawing that confirms pitch and length, and buy bolt and nut as a matched set.
Undercarriage parts for custom machines raise the same questions; the Xumai wide-track chassis page asks for load and mounting data before integration. Other bolts and pins are grouped under construction components.
